Native to Central America, especially an area of southern Mexico known as 'Taxco del Alarcon' where they flower during winter. The ancient Aztecs called them 'cuetlaxochitl' and had many uses for them, one of which was to make a purple dye for clothing. Now that has to be worth a try!
