Who are you looking at ? I, II & III
On a road trip to Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape region of South Africa, I came across this friendly bunch at the side of the road. I stopped to take a photograph and wound down my window. Before I knew it I had a very curious ostrich poking its head inside the car. It made me wonder - who was looking at who?
The art quilts in this series are all made using raw edge applique and quite dense thread sketching to give detail and character to the ostriches. I used a combination of a few commercially printed fabrics and my own had dyed fabrics. I experimented with a variety of patchwork techniques for the backgrounds in each quilt, from traditional patchwork to free cut curved seams. The ostriches were given extra dimension with machine trapunto and each quilt was quilted with dense free motion quilting.
