Smallholder farms in West Africa produce 70% of the world’s cacao beans, bought by chocolate manufacturers whose names are familiar to us all. Back in 2001 these companies signed a pledge to bring an end to the use of child labor in their supply chains, but more than 20 years on there are still 2 million children working on these farms; the not-so-secret workers, hidden in the undergrowth. Suffering frequent injury from accidents and contamination from crop spraying, they miss out on a proper education and are trapped in the cycle of poverty. Please, choose your chocolate thoughtfully.
